MHD SKATE 1401 - LIFE GOES ON, photography, 2022
“Time isn’t in your hands, it passes whether you like it or not. So it’s up to you to make your time as enjoyable as possible, or to stay stuck in grief and spend your time that way.”
– Skater from Mashhad
Skating culture has been big in Iran for years. Due to the conservative nature of Iran’s second largest and most holy city Mashhad—in contrast to the countries’ capital and most progressive city Tehran—does not have an official skate park.
In June 2022, on the international ‘Go Skateboarding Day’, Ghafarian Rabe'I followed a community of Mashhadi Gen Z skateboarders, who do not let the lack of an official skate park get in the way of their passion. By participating in this day, they feel connected to their contemporaries across the globe.
