Afsaneh Ghafarian Rabe’I (Assen/Netherlands, 1992) is an Iranian-Dutch photographer and visual artist.
'As the daughter of migrant workers who ended up in the Netherlands in the late 1960s, I found out at a young age that the Netherlands is not the centre of the world, but that multiple realities can and do exist side by side.'
This layered reality is also reflected in the techniques Ghafarian Rabe'I employs. In addition to photographs she also makes collages, combining photography with paintings, screen printing and textiles.
For Parallel, which is due to be elaborated and released as a self-published art book, Ghafarian Rabe’I examines the parallel experience of second-generation Iranian Dutch nationals.Parallel examines the parallel experience of second-generation Iranian Dutch nationals. The group that was born or grew up in the Dutch system as the result of a choice that their parents made. A world where the outdoors at first glance bears no resemblance at all to their roots. Iranians in diaspora are known for their rapid and successful integration and even assimilation. But the paradox is that many of them, despite not having been born or raised in Iran, maintain strong cultural links with their country of origin and often have a strong sense of homesickness and uprootedness carried with them.
Ghafarian Rabe'I received Stimuleringsfonds Talent Development Grant 2023 and will be presented by Stimuleringsfonds during Dutch Design Week 2023.
